Arcane
0 / 51Fire
0 / 51Frost
11 / 51Who this is for
- Solo questing that already uses Frostbolt and Frost Nova. This order shortens Frostbolt by 0.5 seconds at rank 5 and shortens Nova cooldown by 4 seconds.
- Players who will Ice Lance after Nova. Ice Lance’s 300% Frozen bonus is the recorded rank 1 tooltip (28–32 Frost damage).
Who should skip it
- Anyone who wants Elemental Precision’s hit chance on row 1 instead of a shorter Frostbolt. That swap is an alternative, not this sequence.
- Frostbite Freeze procs are not in this plan. Random Chill Freeze is not part of the order.
Milestones
- Level 10: First point
Improved Frostbolt 1/5. Cast time −0.1 sec. Frost Nova rank 1 is also trained at 10.
- Level 14: Five Frost points spent
Improved Frostbolt 5/5 is −0.5 sec. Row 2 is legal; Permafrost is the spend at 15, not at 14.
- Level 15: Permafrost starts
The sixth point is Permafrost 1/3. Chill duration and extra slow begin here.
- Level 19: Ten Frost points spent
Permafrost 3/3 and Improved Frost Nova 2/2. Ice Lance is legal as the 11th point at 20.
- Level 20: Plan complete
Ice Lance 1/1. The trainer also lists Ice Lance rank 1 at 20 (45 Mana). Use it on Frozen targets after Nova.
How to play it
- Frostbolt is the spell this order shortens (rank 3 at 14: 50 Mana; rank 4 at 20: 65 Mana; spellbook beta). Cast from range. Fireball and Fire Blast stay at trainer ranks; this tree does not change them.
- Frost Nova rank 1 is trained at 10 (55 Mana). That is the Freeze this plan uses. Ice Lance rank 1 is trained at 20 (45 Mana) and this plan’s 11th talent is Ice Lance (28–32 Frost damage, 300% to Frozen targets). Do not Ice Lance before 20: the spell and the talent both sit at 20. Cone of Cold is rank 1 at 26, so it is not in this range.
- After Nova, Ice Lance while the target is Frozen, then Frostbolt as it runs in. Without Frostbite, Chill does not extra-Freeze. Blink is trained at 20 (35% of base mana) if something is on top of you. Mana Shield rank 1 is also 20 (40 Mana).
- If Frostbolts miss often, the maintained alternative spends row 1 on Elemental Precision instead of Improved Frostbolt. That is a full legal 11-point order, not a mid-tree dip.
Why this order
Eleven points stay in Frost. Arcane and Fire remain empty, so the preview matches a Frost-only 10–20 path.
Improved Frostbolt is a row-1 talent and can take the first five points. Permafrost and Improved Frost Nova sit on row 2 after those five. Ice Lance sits on row 3 after ten earlier Frost points.
Ice Lance deals 300% increased damage to Frozen targets. In this range Freeze comes mainly from Frost Nova, because Frostbite is not in the sequence.
What the spent talents do
Improved Frostbolt
Improved Frostbolt reduces Frostbolt cast time by 0.1 seconds per rank, 0.5 seconds at rank 5. It has no prerequisite.
Permafrost
Permafrost rank 3 increases Chill duration by 33% and reduces the target’s speed by an additional 10%. That is the kiting half of this plan.
Improved Frost Nova
Improved Frost Nova reduces Frost Nova cooldown by 2 seconds per rank, 4 seconds at rank 2. Shorter Nova is the Freeze setup for Ice Lance.
Ice Lance
Ice Lance deals 28 to 32 Frost damage and deals 300% increased damage to Frozen targets. It is a 1-rank row-3 talent with no prerequisite of its own.
Weaknesses and tradeoffs
- Elemental Precision is skipped, so Frost and Fire hit chance stay at the baseline.
- Frostbite is skipped, so Chill effects do not have the extra chance to Freeze for 5 seconds.
- Ice Shards is available on row 2 but skipped in favor of Chill and Frost Nova improvements. Shatter, Ice Block and Ice Barrier require more Frost points than level 20 allows.
Gear notes
- Fang of Magmatus (#271095) prints 14–27 Damage, Speed 1.70, 12.26 dps and +4 Intellect, requires 13. Intellect is the recorded caster stat on that dagger (mana and crit chance on spells). The client cache also lists Infurnus for that boss slot; this site does not pick a winner. A wand, if you have one, is for filling while Frostbolt is not casting — this catalog does not tag a Forever wand as Mage-only.
Optional point
Elemental Precision 5 instead of Improved Frostbolt 5
Frost and Fire spells miss enough that hit chance matters more than 0.5 seconds off Frostbolt.
Elemental Precision rank 5 is +5% hit with Frost and Fire (row 1). This alternative keeps Permafrost 3, Improved Frost Nova 2 and Ice Lance. It does not mix the two row-1 talents.
