WoW Forever servers

At launch you pick a WoW Forever server as a ruleset — Normal, PvP or Roleplaying — not a realm name. Group for quests, dungeons and raids only with the same faction and ruleset. Switching later needs a character transfer. Battlegrounds use a shared pool. Hardcore is after launch. Forever Beta still uses test realms.

Can we play together?

A WoW Forever server only groups friends on the same faction and ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, including dungeons and raids. Factions remain separate. Battlegrounds are the published exception: they use a shared pool, which is not a premade group across rulesets. Forever is realmless, not regionless.

Grouping walls are from the Deep Dive. Battlegrounds, transfers and Oceania are from the 17 September Q&A liveblog, checked 18 September 2026. That write-up is not an official transcript.

  1. Agree Horde or Alliance, then one launch ruleset, before anyone hits create.
  2. In Forever Beta this week, match the same test realm so you can find each other.
Can we play together?
If you areTogether?Do this
Same faction, same ruleset — quests, dungeons, raidsYesCreate on the agreed faction and ruleset, then invite.
Same faction, different rulesets — quests, dungeons, raidsNoPick one launch ruleset for the whole group.
Same faction, different rulesets — battleground queueShared poolYou can land in the same battleground from different rulesets. That does not let you form a dungeon or raid group across rulesets.
Different factionsNoPick Horde or Alliance together. There is no cross-faction grouping.
Hardcore + any other rulesetNoHardcore is after launch and enclosed. Level together on Normal, PvP or Roleplaying.
Oceania + US friendsPossibleOceania characters are hosted on Oceania data servers and share the US-wide auction house. Playing overseas can raise latency because the game picks a datacenter for the group.
Other region combinationsUnknownThe Q&A said realmless, not regionless. It did not publish a general EU–US grouping rule.
Beta, different test realmsMatch if you canPick the same available test realm this week so you can find each other. The now-live note only says to select any available realm; it does not prove every Beta cross-realm group is blocked. The pick does not carry to launch.

You cannot move a character to another ruleset without a transfer. Cost, wait time and allowed directions are unpublished. Hardcore later adds a one-way death transfer out, including to PvP.

A Skyborne early name reservation is not a realm and not a ruleset.

Beta vs launch

Beta this month, Realmless in November

A test realm now does not reserve a launch realm name and does not lock your 4 November ruleset.

Launch · 4 November 2026

Pick a ruleset

Forever is realmless at launch: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying. Each ruleset is its own large ecosystem. Hardcore is on the later roadmap.

Beta · through 21 October

Pick a test realm

Install Forever Beta from Battle.net, then select any available test realm and make a test character. If friends also have access, match that realm so you are not hunting across test shards.

Rulesets

What each ruleset is

Each WoW Forever server is one of these rulesets. “PvE server” means Normal. Roleplaying outdoor PvP is still unpublished.

What each ruleset is
RulesetPick it ifYou accept
NormalYou want the default cooperative game.Outdoor PvP only when both sides agree.
PvPYou want contested outdoor world PvP.Hostile players can interrupt quests and travel in those zones.
RoleplayingYou want the roleplay community.Outdoor PvP rules are not in the recap.
Hardcore (after launch)You want an enclosed mode where death has lasting consequences.Do not mix this with a Normal, PvP or Roleplaying leveling plan.

FAQ

WoW Forever server FAQ

Switching a WoW Forever server, Oceania, names and Legacy progress.

Can I change rulesets after I create a character?

Not directly. The 17 September Q&A said you need a character transfer. Cost, timing and which directions are allowed are unpublished. A later Hardcore death can transfer out, including to PvP.

How do Oceania players play with overseas friends?

The Q&A said Forever is realmless, not regionless. Oceania players are hosted on Oceania data servers and share the US-wide auction house. Playing overseas with friends can raise latency because the game picks a datacenter for the group. That is not a published EU–US interop rule.

Are character names unique across rulesets?

Yes, per the Q&A: names are unique in a region, and the same full two-part name cannot be reused across rulesets. You have to fill the second name field.

Do Collections and Legacy Points carry between rulesets?

Yes across Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, account-wide. Hardcore is one-way: progress earned there can move out; nothing flows back in.
